Mr Kenneth Simataa Matomola, CISNA Chairperson, highlighted in his speech that CISNA Strategic Plan 2022–2026 focuses on harmonisation of regulatory frameworks across SADC Member States, capacity building and market development. Mr Matomola extended his gratitude to the FSC Mauritius for the huge support and to the SADC Development Finance Resource Centre (DFRC) for facilitating the capacity-building program for the second consecutive time. The DFRC’s ongoing assistance has been instrumental in enhancing governance within the region’s financial services sector.
Building on the success of the first edition held in August 2023, this year’s programme brought together Board Members from various regulatory bodies who reflected on key topics, including governance in financial regulation, consumer protection and education, technological innovation, and Anti-Money Laundering, Combating the Financing of Terrorism, and Proliferation Financing (AML/CFT/PF). Board Members gave an overview on the current status of fintech and AML/CFT/PF initiatives in their respective jurisdictions, highlighting how their Boards are advocating growth and development in these areas.
Industry experts delivered insightful presentations on fintech developments, while Senior Officials of the FSC shared their expertise on fintech and AML practices. International standard-setting bodies such as the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS), and the International Organisation of Pension Supervisors (IOPS) further discussed on the global regulatory standards. Dr D. Maraye, Ombudsperson for Financial Services of Mauritius, former Governor of the BOM and Board Member of the Financial Regulator, and representatives from the DFRC, shared their perspectives on leadership, governance, and innovation.
The CISNA Secretary General, Ms Brinda Harjan, delivered a presentation on “CISNA in 2024: Vision, Direction, and Accomplishments”. Ms Harjan outlined CISNA’s strategic goals, and highlighted the key achievements in 2024, while reiterating CISNA’s commitment to promoting a resilient and sound financial services sector across SADC.
CISNA remains dedicated to equipping Board Members with the skills and knowledge which are requisite to navigate the complexities of the financial services sector. The Annual Capacity Building programme continues to serve as a vital platform for sharing experiences, fostering collaboration, and strengthening governance across CISNA Member Authorities. By promoting mutual learning and cooperation, the event served as a platform to reinforce the role of African unity in driving growth and innovation within the region’s financial landscape.
