She spoke on the importance for the United Nations (‘UN’) to use sanctions as an enforcement tool to maintain or restore international peace and security, and as an alternative to the use of armed forces. The range of sanctions imposed by the UN include comprehensive economic and trade sanctions and/or more targeted measures, that is ‘smart sanctions’ such as arms embargoes, travel bans, assets freeze or commodity ban.
Mrs. Venketasawmy highlighted the importance for Mauritius, as a member of the Eastern and Southern Africa Anti-Money Laundering Group, to continue ensure that appropriate measures are taken for the jurisdiction to comply with the recommendations made by the Financial Action Task Force.
